Individual Music Lessons

We are happy to provide a number of practice studios at Shadelands Art Center. Our studios provide a safe, distraction free environment so you can focus on nothing more than your music and instruction.

Below is a list of Center for Community Arts approved music lesson instructors. Please contact the instructors directly for information on fees and lesson availability.

Cello

Stephen Evans

Instruments: Cello, Piano

Education: BA in Cello Performance - University of Texas, Austin | MA in Orchestral Performance - University of London, Goldsmith's College

Stephen has played with many groups in the Bay Area and beyond. He has a string quartet that plays for weddings and parties, and he is also currently part of a Scottish fiddle group called Soul Weaving.  He was the accompanist for Diablo Women's Chorale until 2015.  He has been a member of Stockton Symphony, Fremont Symphony, Monterey Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, Vallejo Symphony, and the San Francisco Choral Society.

Flute

Monica Williams

Instruments: Flute, Beginning Piano

Education: BA in Flute Performance - Eastman School of Music

Monica Williams performs with Phoenix Rising and the San Francisco Wind Ensemble. She is a member of the California Music Educators Association (CMEA), Contra Costa Performing Arts Society, ASCAP, National Flute Association (NFA), and is a voting member for the Grammy's, as well as a founding teacher for the Royal Conservatory’s Music Development Program.

Her students have been selected to perform at the Honor’s Performance Series at Carnegie Hall, High School and Junior High School All State Bands, Contra Costa County Honor Bands, All Northern Honor Band, District Bands, Berkeley Youth Orchestra, Oakland Youth Orchestra, Sunset Youth Orchestra, Young Person’s Symphony Orchestra, and Cal Poly CA All State Band. In addition, her students have won numerous awards including Command Performances at CMEA Solo and Ensemble, Finalist for the San Francisco International Flute Festival, Youth Focus Competitions, Royal Conservatory Music Development Program State and National Awards.

John Mendle

Instruments: Classical Guitar, Lute and historical plucked strings, Ukulele

Education: BA and MA in Music, Professional Studies Diploma - San Francisco Conservatory of Music

John Mendle has studied music under Sergio Assad and Judicael Perroy, and historical plucked strings with Richard Savino. He has played in master classes for Nigel North, Paul O’Dette, David Russell and Tilman Hoppstock. He has toured with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, performed solo at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and given recitals for concert presenters, guitar societies, and guitar festivals in the US and Canada- including the 2014 Guitar Foundation of America annual convention, where he also served as a judge for the youth competition.

Stephan is a board certified music therapist with over 30 years of experience. He created Contra Costa’s Welcome Home Baby Program and has served as Director of Sonoma County Health Services. He specializes in providing music therapy to children with autism and related disabilities.

Stephan has performed classical and jazz violin music in Europe at various festivals and radio stations since 1974. He founded the Benicia Celtic Band and performs Scottish fiddle music at various local venues. He has performed classical as well as jazz piano in Europe and the US at various venues and on radio. Stephan is also an accomplished guitarist. He studied classical as well as jazz guitar and is happy to support his students in all styles from pop, rock, folk to classical and jazz.

Harp

Cynthia Schultz

Instruments: Piano, Harp

Education: BS in Music Education/Music Therapy - University of Minnesota

Cynthia is a classically trained harpist and pianist who has been performing on both instruments since childhood. A well-respected performer, teacher and early childhood music specialist, Cynthia has extensive experience teaching piano, harp and preschool music classes.  Seeing the need for children’s musical experiences to start before formal music lessons begin, she began her preschool music program called “Notes to Grow On!”. These classes are designed to lay down the foundations of music through fun, energetic activities that emphasize rhythm and tuneful singing to preschoolers. 

As a harpist, Cynthia has had an opportunity to perform extensively for; private clubs, wineries, hotels, business events, and weddings. In addition, she has been a featured soloist for numerous concerts. Cynthia has released two CD's that have been well received; "Celestial Noel", for the Christmas season, and "Heartfelt Favorites". Cynthia has a strong love for teaching piano and harp to people of all ages and tailors lessons to meet each student’s individual needs.

James Cannata

Instruments: Percussion, Drum Set ­

Education: Studied percussion at Cal State East Bay and with distinguished teacher Chuck Brown

James currently performs with the bands, Nuance, Sugarbeat, and Bob Athayde and Friends. He is the founder and director of the popular percussion group Bangs & Beats, and the lead drummer for the worship band at St. Matthew Lutheran Church for the past 10 years. An accomplished drummer, singer, songwriter and teacher with over 35 years of performing as a professional musician, James has been a percussion teacher at Walnut Creek Community Arts for the past 15 years!

Rem Djemilev

Instruments: Violin, Viola, Piano

Education: BA and MA from Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory

Rem studied violin at the Moscow Conservatory under the great virtuoso, Professor Leonid Kogan, and viola under professor Feodor Druzhinin. In 1988 he toured the United States as a member of the American-Soviet Youth Orchestra, conducted by Zubin Mehta and Dimitri Kitaenko. After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory, Rem moved to the United States. He has toured extensively throughout Europe and the America with the Arlekin String Quartet.

Along with teaching private viola and violin lessons, Rem teaches at the Crowden School and at Black Pine Circle School in Berkeley. In addition to Young People’s Chamber Orchestra, he conducts the Young Performer’s Orchestra and the Diablo Regional Youth Orchestra in Walnut Creek, and plays in many orchestras and chamber groups in the Bay Area, including the Sor Ensemble and the Arlekin String Quartet.

Education: BA in Violin - Shanghai Conservatory | MM in Violin Performance - Ball State University

Tonya is the former first violinist of the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony and Illinois Symphony as well as current guest violinist of the Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra. Her solo album was published by Shanghai Audio-Visual Publishing Co. Ltd. She is a certified Suzuki violin instructor and has been actively teaching both traditional and Suzuki violin for 20 years.
